WAITS is joining millions of activists across the world to end violence against women, as part of the ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign [today] Thursday 14th February 2013.

The campaign, now in its 15th year, echoes WAITS commitment to empowering and supporting women across Birmingham, some of whom face issues including domestic violence, isolation and fear of crime, enabling them to lead active and fuller lives in their local communities.

WAITS will be joining organisations across the West Midlands to support the campaign. One Billion Rising aims to ensure that violence against women and girls is as important as ending poverty, AIDS and global warming, and is urging women and organisations across the world to highlight the issue with their local and national governments.

Marcia Lewinson, Chief Executive at WAITS said: ‘Our experience of working with marginalised women across Birmingham has shown they have a resilience and power. Many have had to overcome barriers, including domestic violence, mental ill health and low aspiration to become leaders within their own communities.

We wholeheartedly support the One Billion Rising campaign, as it offers hope, solidarity and a focus on an issue that needs to be eradicated.’
