Madeleine Rees OBE
International lawyer
WAITS was pleased to welcome international lawyer Madeleine Rees OBE as their new patron.
Madeleine is current Secretary General of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the worldwide organisation that aims to bring women together to oppose war, violence and global militarisation.
Throughout her career, she has worked tirelessly to combat discrimination and promote human rights, causes that are close to the heart of WAITS.
Madeleine, who was awarded an OBE for services to human rights in 2014, said:
"I am delighted to be introducing myself as a new patron of WAITS and I am excited to support in whatever way I can. My earliest learning experiences working on women’s rights was actually in Birmingham, with the Rape Crisis Centre. This experience stood me in good stead in understanding discrimination in law and justice and how it was, and still is, embedded in our institutions. It feels really good and timely to be back with the Brummies."
Madeleine became a lawyer after women in Nicaragua convinced her of the need to use law to achieve social justice and fight patriarchy to end inequalities through international women’s solidarity.
She continued: "WILPF sees the importance of the mantra to ‘think globally, act locally’ but also reverse it so that the local experiences are shared and reacted to globally. A way of fulfilling what those amazing women from Nicaragua said all those years ago."
These are just some of the testimonials that we have received over the years.
Jas Mann
Patron for WAITS
"When I hear of women experiencing trauma as a result of domestic violence, it resonates with me.
"I too was a victim of domestic violence and controlling behaviour. I also understand how it feels to be isolated. Especially, when the professionals are provided false impressions.
"These misunderstandings can sometimes make asking for help, that more difficult. Fortunately, I was able to escape the physical abuse and I want you to know, life can only get better when the abuse stops.
"It is an honour to have been asked to become a Patron for the WAITS Charity. Working alongside a fantastic alliance will be life changing for us all and it’s vital we all support their efforts.
"My hope is to raise awareness through my associates and at the same time, offer my skill set to something that affects each and everyone of us".
Baroness Karren Brady
Member of The House of Lords & businesswoman, author and novelist
"The work of WAITS changes the lives of so many women both regionally and nationally. It enables women to take positive steps forward, achieve their dreams and transform their lives after experiencing many difficult circumstances.
"WAITS offers numerous opportunities for women and with our help can continue to do so. I wish them every success for what will be a truly enjoyable evening."
